OUR FARMER’S STORY.
It all started with a love of gardening and looking at the clock...
Our farmer, Jenn, is a Colorado native and grew up in Aurora, CO. Her grandfather was farmer in Welby, CO. She still remembers him working in the field next to his childhood home - a beautiful, white farmhouse with a large barn in the back full of farm tools and antiques. He loved to grow his delicious, sweet celery just in time for Thanksgiving.
While Jenn decided to go pursue Accounting and Finance at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS), her love of plants and gardening continued to be her passion and escape after a long day of crunching numbers. Her dream of being a “farm girl” and owning land of her own never ceased.
One sleepless night, Jenn was seized by the impulse to scour the internet for available farmland in Colorado Springs until she found one property that captured her imagination. She read and re-read the property’s description and explored the photos. Finally, after researching funding methods to purchase the land, well water guidelines, and anything else she could overthink, she decided to call it a night. The time on the clock was exactly 1:11 AM. With Jenn’s history of “God Winks” and her connection with the number 11, she decided to continue her late-night research, but this time she Googled “1:11 Bible Verses”. The first bible verse search result said:
“Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.”
- Genesis 1:11 NIV
She knew in that moment God was calling her to continue her quest to start a farm. From that day forward, she immersed herself in everything farming. She registered for classes, she read book after book, she listened to farming podcasts, and watched hundreds (if not thousands) of YouTube videos; she went to Bee School, she attended farming seminars and conferences, and most importantly, she got her hands in the dirt! Her first season, she started two honeybee hives, planted five fruit trees, and grew as much produce for her family and friends as she could.
The rest, as they say, is history… One Eleven Neighborhood Farm started their first official season in 2021 and it has been an amazing journey thus far! We hope you join us and come along for the ride!
Oh! And! Unfortunately, that land purchase didn’t work out in the end. We’re still on our quest for the perfect affordable property in the Colorado Springs area, so if you know of one let us know! (Especially if it has a beautiful, white farmhouse with a large barn for farm tools and antiques.)
